(Moncton, New Brunswick – October 11, 2018) The Magic have added another big piece to the puzzle just weeks before officially opening its training camp at the end of this month. Head Coach and GM of Player Operations Joe Salerno announced today the team has come to terms with former Villanova standout Dominic Cheek.
Cheek, a 6'7" Forward from Jersey City, New Jersey is a former McDonalds High School All-American from the prestigious St. Anthony's High School in New Jersey, where he played for legendary Head Coach Bob Hurley. Following a stellar High School Career, he attended NCAA Division I Basketball power house Villanova, where he worked his way into a starting role by his junior season, averaging just under 13 points and 4 rebounds per game for the Wildcats.
"Dominic is a special talent. He has as good of a basketball pedigree as your going to find, having played at some of the top programs in the United States on multiple levels. He has proven he can be a major contributor virtually every where he has played" commented Salerno.
Following multiple NBA workouts coming out of school, Cheek played professionally in Australia, Chile, Mexico, and the NBL Canada, having spent the 2015-16 season with the now defunct Orangeville A's. In his first and only season in the NBL, Cheek averaged 17 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
"He brings a lot of size and athleticism to our backcourt. He is a scorer by nature, possessing the ability to get to the rim, knock down the open 3, and create for his teammates. We have been on the lookout for a bigger wing this entire offseason. We are confident we found a good one in Dominic" continued Salerno.
Last October, the dynamic forward was drafted in the 1stround of the NBA G-League draft, (24thoverall) by the Maine Red Claws, before subsequently being traded to the Reno Bighorns. Cheek suffered an injury in the teams' training camp but is now 100% healthy and looking forward to competing again in the NBL Canada.
"I'm so excited to be part of a great organization and a great group of players. I've heard a lot of good things about Moncton Basketball and can't wait to get there and help take the team to the next level and compete for a championship" stated Cheek.
Cheek will join an already explosive backcourt with the likes of NBL Canada veterans Jahii Carson, Doug Herring, and Corey Allmond among others when the team opens training camp October 26th, at Crandall University.
The Magic's home opener is slated for November 17th, at the newly opened Avenir Centre when they welcome in the defending Atlantic Division Champs the Halifax Hurricanes. Tip off is scheduled for 7pm. Tickets for Magic home games go on sale October 19th.
